Music Review: Cobra Starship – Hot Mess
My first introduction to Cobra Starship was via the end theme song from the motion picture, Snakes On A Plane. I thought for sure they were a temporary group — one that was created by the cast or crew members (or friends of the cast or crew members) from the movie and written specifically for the film itself.
While the song wasn’t Grammy-winning material on any level, it more than met the standards raised (or lowered, if you will) onscreen in Snakes On A Plane. Therefore, the song was A-OK in my book (as was the movie).
Sometime down the line, the name Cobra Starship came up in conversation. “Ah, so they are real?” I remarked, resulting in that all-too-familiar “You don’t get out much, do you?” look that most of my younger acquaintances give me. Indeed, Cobra Starship was a real group — and their popularity had been on the rise since their debut song was heard in Snakes On A Plane (as it turned out, I was half-right: their first song was written specifically for the film, but the group had formed before then).
And now, after three years and two full-length commercial albums, Cobra Starship returns with HotMess. Sadly, the album received a bit of negative attention around the Internet following its street date in August.
Some claimed that the album lived up to its title. Others rambled on how bad the lyrics were. The rest of the haters reported to have suffered ghastly flashbacks of the neon-fused ‘80s from listening to the album (the artwork displays all the colors of the Day-Glo Rainbow). Needless to say, with all of that bad publicity, I had to give Hot Mess a listen.
Honestly, I have no idea what people were complaining about. Hot Mess is a rockin’ album, with beats that make even us old, 30+ folk want to get up and dance. So, what’s all the fuss about?

Gabe Saporta To Collaborate with Glamour Kills
A few weeks ago, bits and pieces of what appeared to be a viral campaign titled "Overnight Sensation" appeared online. Photos surfaced of people wearing shirts reading "Overnight Sensation" while posing with Cobra Starship lead singer Gabe Saporta. According to reports, the people who traveled on the Cobra Party Bus at the MTV Video Music Awards were also asked to wear the shirts.
Then, Gabe retweeted a post from the official Glamour Kills Twitter, featuring a link to www.theovernightsensation.com, which featured a fake article naming him the "worst dressed celebrity." He exchanged jokes on Twitter with Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy and then seemed to leave it alone.
But now, the announcement has been made: the shirts are part of Gabe's new collaboration with Glamour Kills. The line is, obviously, called "Overnight Sensation." Right now the website is simply a placeholder image, with the text:
WTF?
"THE NEW COLLAB LINE WITH GABE SAPORTA"
"WAIT...WTF!!??"
"DAMN STRAIGHT."
The line is set to launch on 10/20/09, however Pete Wentz has posted what appear to be a few previews of the line to his blog, along with a link to the site and the official announcement of the collaboration.
yo the fuckers from glamour kills were talking shiz on my boy @gabrielsaporta style. not into it. made em an offer they couldnt refuse- they are now manufacturing and distributing a line just for gabe. www.theovernightsensation.com - from the dude who brought you the purple hoody - welcome to hobosexual.

eGigs talks to Ryland Blackinton of Cobra Starship
eGigs got the chance to have a quick chat with Ryland Blackinton the lead guitarist for Cobra Starship. Rylandalong with fellow band member Alex Suarez formed the folky/pop duo This Is Ivy League, and is also reputed to be Guy Ripley, a fictional reporter for BBC World News.
Hi Ryland, how are you?
Great, we are in the car on the way to play an acoustic thing for MySpace, driving through London right now, we've just been through the park which was really nice.
Have you been to the UK before?
Several times, yeah, I actually studied here at college for a semester, so that was a few years back. We've come back as a band now five times or so. I love it here.
Was it while you were over here you came up with Guy Ripley?
You know, I have been an Anglophile since I was a kid. We have a station over there called PBS and they used to play 'Only Fools And Horses', 'Blackadder', and 'Faulty Towers', which was the big one for me, and from there I got into Coogan, Gervais, Sessions, and The Goons. I love Peter Sellers, I love all that stuff. It's just kind of been my bag I guess. But, no, I don't know anything about Guy Ripley. People say he looks like me, but that's about it. (laughs)
Can you describe each of your band members briefly, with a couple of words about each one?
A couple of words for each one, Alex Suarez (bass) who I've known the longest, he is hungover, laughs, and sweet. Victoria (keytar) is salty and sweet, Nate (drums) is savoury and sweet, and Gabe (vocals) is just a huge fuckin' handful. He's spicy and sweet.
Where is Pleasure Ryland?
Some people think it's a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Barbados, but it's actually a place that I've developed in my mind. It's a utopia if you will, a place where you don't have to listen to anybody. There's no rules, and there's no bullshit, there's just all the things that one loves. Everybody's got a little pleasure island in their heart somewhere, whatever it is that they like.
